By David Bradford for VFL Insider

On Wednesday, Tennessee head coach Butch Jones addressed the media ahead of Tennessee’s opening game against Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Monday.

During the press conference, he revealed a notable surgery, suspension, addressed the quarterback competition, and praised the team’s depth.

Quarterback battle still competitive

According to Butch, the quarterback battle between Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano is still up in the air.

“It’s still a competition,” he revealed. “I guess we’ll see who it is on Monday.”

Drew Richmond suspended

Butch announced that offensive lineman Drew Richmond will miss the Georgia Tech game due to a violation of team rules.

“If he does everything he’s supposed to do, he’ll be back with us,” Butch said.

With Richmond out, the Vols will turn to the tackle combo of Brett Kendrick and Marcus Tatum against Georgia Tech.

Darrin Kirkland Jr. undergoes surgery

Linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. underwent surgery on his meniscus, meaning that he’ll miss significant time for the second consecutive season.

Keys against Georgia Tech

Tennessee opens its season on Monday against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. When facing an offense as unique as the Yellow Jackets’, Butch emphasized the importance of complementary football.

“When I talk about complementary football, I’m talking about all three phases of the game,” Butch said. “They all have to be in sync for us to be successful.”

Defensive lineman Kendal Vickers also stated that the team has used the offseason to prepare for Georgia Tech’s infamous cut blocking and is confident his team is prepared.

Starting 9 and Starting 22

When asked about his offensive line, Butch said he viewed them as a “Starting 9” instead of a “Starting 5.” He later said that he doesn’t view his starters as a “Starting 22,” which he views as a compliment to the team’s depth and competitive spirit.
