Vols Notebook: Butch & his QBs, how to handle the triple-option

This might be the longest build up for any Tennessee Vols season opener in a while. Due to the Georgia Tech game happening on Labor Day night, it feels like we’ve waited an extra week.

During that holding period, it’s allowed us to break down many aspects about this game. Our staff of writers have peeled apart what is a tough opening game for Vol fans to read.

First it begins with the amount of “unknowns” with this roster and this coaching staff. Sure, there’s plenty of talent in both areas, but the inexperience and newness can cause anxiety for fans: COLUMN: The Vols could be just about anything.

Vols QB Battle

The quarterback competition is the next biggest question for Team 121. Gone to the NFL is three-year starter Josh Dobbs and while his tenure was filled with extreme ups and downs, there was a comfort level with who was taking snaps (in shotgun or under center). The two man battle between junior Quinten Dormady and redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano has been quiet. Most believe Dormady won the job months ago. But, as Andrew Darago wrote, Butch Jones has the chance to handle this competition way better than one of college football’s best.

The “triple-option”

Ah, yes. Teams hate playing Georgia Tech and fans hate when their team schedules the Yellow Jackets. Paul Johnson’s offense is straight out of the 1930’s, but it’s as tough to defend now as it ever has been. It’s so rare in today’s game, that teams are caught off guard, undisciplined and out of position. But, Tennessee’s defense has a great silver-lining against it.

It’s up to the linebackers to make sure the Yellow Jacket’s ball carriers don’t break free. Which will be difficult without Austin Smith, and Darren Kirkland Jr. (who will miss the entire season).

Predictions

All five of our writers gave their predictions for Monday’s game. All five went in the same direction.

Also, last week on A to Z Sports, we gave our season long predictions for Butch Jones and Team 121 of the Tennessee Volunteers.
