Three Reasons Florida Downed Tennessee in the Swamp

And so Florida week ends on a disappointment. Tennessee drops to the Gators in the Swamp 20-26.

It ended in as dramatic of fashion as it could… With the Gators winning on a 66 yard hail mary as time expired.

There were many story lines to the game, but here are three reasons why Tennessee lost in Florida.

Poor Play Calling

There was some good here, but the bad was overwhelmingly bad. John Kelly kept the Vols in the game several times, but at key moments in the game, he was over on the sideline. This doesn’t come as a slide at Carlin Fils-Aime, but Kelly is, bar none, Tennessee’s best player every time he’s on the field.

It’s put up or shut up time for Butch Jones. Poor play calling like this has cause many before him to lose their job.

Special Teams Faux Pas’s

Brent Cimaglia hadn’t played a down in his college career before today. However, head coach Butch Jones decided to roll with the freshman after he had put up a strong showing during fall camp. Cimaglia managed to bang through a 51-yard field goal in the second quarter, but missed from 47 and, coincidentally, 51 yards afterwards.

After this Aaron Medley handled the kicking duties and missed, in perfect Aaron Medley fashion, missed a 44-yard field goal that would have cut the Gators lead to a single score.

Inaccuracy From Dormady

Two strong showing from junior quarterback solidified the Texas-native’s spot in Tennessee’s first team offense. Saturday seemed to prove otherwise. Dormady looked shaken for the majority of the game, finishing 21-39 for 259 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.

Sure, the pick six really wasn’t Dormady’s fault. It came off the hands of the reeciver and fell into the corner’s numbers. The other two, were bad. The junior’s interceptions near the goal line were difficult to watch. Just when it looked like the Vols were knocking on the door, Dormady put Tennessee right back out of it.
